Consultation/Provider Review — What to Expect

Provider review, async vs. sync visits, how long approval takes, possible outcomes, and what happens if you're denied.

Consultation & Provider Review — What to Expect

Once you submit your online assessment, a licensed provider in your state reviews your file. Our system flags major disqualifiers upfront and will alert you if a medication is unlikely to be approved — if that happens, double-check that your assessment answers are accurate.

Here's what the review process looks like:

Who reviews your file? A licensed clinician — physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant — credentialed in your state. Not an algorithm. Not an offshore team. A real provider who reviews your health history and makes an independent clinical judgment.

Async vs. sync visits — what's the difference?

Most RespondWell visits are asynchronous: your provider reviews your assessment, makes a determination, and communicates through secure messaging — no scheduled call required. Fast, flexible, works around your schedule.

Some states require a synchronous visit — a real-time phone or video call with your provider — before a prescription can be issued. If your state requires it, you'll be prompted to schedule after completing your assessment.

  • States requiring a sync visit: Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Testosterone Cypionate requires a synchronous visit in every state, regardless of location — it's a controlled substance, and a real-time provider interaction is required before it can be prescribed. Once lab results are in, you'll schedule a brief call with your provider — in many cases, if you're available, we can get this done the same day results come back.

Enclomiphene (a non-controlled hormone optimization option) follows standard async review in applicable states.

Sync visits add some time to the review process. Most are completed within 24 hours of scheduling.

How long does it take? Async reviews average approximately 4 hours during business hours, though timing can vary — providers work around the clock, but we still need to match you with a clinician licensed in your state. Sync visits depend on scheduling availability. Complex cases or incomplete assessments may take longer. You'll receive a notification when your review is complete.

Possible outcomes

  • Approved: Your provider determines you're eligible and issues a prescription. Processing begins immediately.

  • Additional information needed: Your provider will message you through the portal. Respond promptly to avoid delays.

  • Not eligible: Your provider may determine that treatment isn't appropriate at this time, or that in-person evaluation is needed first. This is a clinical decision — RespondWell does not override it. If your prescription is denied, you'll be automatically refunded.

No prescription is guaranteed. Eligibility is determined entirely by your provider's professional judgment. If you have questions about why you weren't approved, message your care team through the portal.

What if I disagree with my provider's decision? You can request clarification through secure messaging. You also have the right to seek care from any other provider or in-person clinic at any time.
